THE CALCULATION
From a quoted rate to a clear total.
Start with a price for the same purity as the piece you are buying. If you have a quote for a different purity, the tool uses a proportion to estimate the selected grade. When the quote and selected purity match, no purity adjustment is made.

Find the per-gram rate
Quoted price ÷ quoted grams × selected purity ÷ quoted purity.
For silver, purity is the fineness number, such as 925 or 999. - 02
Add the making charges
Metal value = rate per gram × net weight. Add a flat charge, a per-gram charge, or a percentage of metal value.

Include the GST
Estimated total = (metal value + making charges) × 1.03.
For the closest estimate, use the seller's direct quote for your chosen purity. Proportional conversions cannot account for different retail premiums.
A 100 g silver gift estimate
Suppose the seller quotes ₹100 per gram for 925 silver, and ₹500 in total making charges. For a 100 g article, the estimate is:

UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE BUYING
Know your silver’s fineness.
Sterling silver
925 means 92.5% silver by nominal fineness. For jewellery or gifting, compare the complete article: net silver weight, making charge and finish all matter.
Another grade to check
990 means 99.0% nominal silver fineness. Do not assume every silver article is 999. Match the invoice grade to the rate used in your estimate.
The calculator includes 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 and 999, the seven grades listed in BIS’s IS 2112:2025 update. A conversion such as 925 ÷ 999 estimates metal value; it does not predict a finished item’s shop price.

READ THE WHOLE BILL
Making charges count, too.
CBIC's jewellery FAQ applies 3% GST to the total retail jewellery value, including making charges. That is the method used here. Separate job-work services are outside this calculator.
Ask for a quote before GST. If the rate already includes tax or making charges, entering it as a basic metal rate will count those amounts again.

If you are choosing silver coins for Dhanteras or Diwali gifts, start with the weight of one coin. Check the seller’s premium and packaging cost, then work out the total number of gifts. A display price per kilogram may not be the retail rate for a small coin.

Look beyond the weight
For anklets, a keepsake or a silver bowl, a detailed finish can change making charges. Compare items at the same purity and ask for the net silver weight. If you are buying a pair, confirm whether the quoted weight is for one piece or both.
PUJA & HOME
Check what is actually silver
For a diya, plate or decorative article, ask whether it is solid silver or silver plated, and whether its weight includes a base or filling. Do not multiply the full weight of a plated article by a solid-silver rate.

Confirm the rate unit
Silver is often quoted by kilogram. Divide that quote by 1,000 to get the price per gram.
Read the purity
Match the quoted grade to the product. A “925” mark states fineness but does not, on its own, establish BIS hallmarking.
Use net silver weight
Exclude packaging, stones and non-silver parts. Confirm the total weight when buying pairs or sets.
Check the hallmark details
BIS introduced voluntary HUID-based silver hallmarking from 1 September 2025. Where an article carries it, verify the details in BIS Care.
Separate premiums and making
Ask whether a coin premium or design charge is already included in the quoted rate, so you do not add it twice.
Keep an itemised invoice
Retain the purity, net weight, rate, charges and seller’s return or exchange terms alongside the bill.

Silver calculator FAQs
How do I calculate silver price from a rate per kg?
Divide the kilogram quote by 1,000 to get a per-gram rate, then multiply by the net silver weight. If the rate is for another purity, this calculator adjusts by selected fineness divided by quoted fineness. Add making charges and GST for the purchase estimate.
What is the difference between 925 and 999 silver?
925 silver has 92.5% nominal silver content; 999 has 99.9%. They are different grades, so compare quotes for the same purity. Design, fabrication and seller premiums can also change the final price.
Does the silver calculator fetch a live market rate?
No. Enter a current quote from your seller or chosen source. The tool does not fetch prices or predict future rates, and the sample numbers are not a current market quote.
How is GST calculated on silver jewellery?
The calculator applies 3% GST to silver value plus making charges for a retail jewellery estimate, in line with CBIC’s jewellery FAQ. It does not calculate separate job-work services.
Can I use this for silver coins, bars and jewellery?
You can estimate metal value using the correct purity and net weight. For the final purchase amount, check any coin premium, making charges, other fees and tax treatment with the seller. The calculator does not value silver plating or non-silver components.
Can I enter a custom weight such as 25 g or 250 g?
Yes. Enter the weight directly in grams, including decimals where needed. The 1 g, 10 g and 1 kg shortcuts are conveniences, not limits.
Does a 925 stamp mean an item is BIS hallmarked?
No. A fineness stamp alone is not the full BIS hallmark. Check the applicable hallmark details and, for HUID-marked silver articles, verify them through BIS Care. BIS introduced the voluntary silver HUID system in September 2025.
Why is my seller’s silver price different from this estimate?
The calculator uses your quoted rate and a proportional purity conversion. Retail rates, fabrication, coin premiums, non-silver parts, additional fees and rounding can make the actual invoice different.
